RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Neuropathic foot ulcers are the leading cause of nontraumatic foot amputations, particularly among patients with diabetes. Traditional methods of monitoring and managing these patients are periodic in-person clinic visits, which are passive and may be insufficient for preventing neuropathic foot ulcers and amputations. Continuous remote temperature monitoring has the potential to capture the critical period before the foot ulcers develop and to improve outcomes by providing real-time data and early interventions. For the first time, the effectiveness of such a strategy to prevent neuropathic foot ulcers and related complications among high-risk patients in a real-world commercial setting is reported. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a real-world continuous remote temperature monitoring program in preventing neuropathic foot ulcers and amputations in patients with diabetes. METHODS: In this retrospective analysis of a real-world continuous remote temperature monitoring program, 115 high-risk patients identified by clinical providers from 15 geographically diverse private podiatry offices were analyzed. Patients received continuous remote monitoring socks as part of the program. The enrollment was based on medical necessity as decided by their managing physician. We evaluated data from up to 2 years before enrollment and up to 3 years during the program. The primary outcome was the rate of wound development. Secondary outcomes included amputation rate, the severity of the foot ulcers, and the number of visits to an outpatient podiatry clinic after enrolling in the program. RESULTS: We observed significantly lower rates of foot ulceration (relative risk reduction [RRR] 0.68; 95% CI 0.52-0.79; number needed to treat [NNT] 5.0; P<.001), less moderate to severe ulcers (RRR 0.86; 95% CI 0.70-0.93; NNT 16.2; P<.001), less amputations (RRR 0.83; 95% CI 0.39-0.95; NNT 41.7; P=.006), and less hospitalizations (RRR 0.63; 95% CI 0.33-0.80; NNT 5.7; P<.002). We found a decrease in outpatient podiatry office visits during the program (RRR 0.31; 95% CI 0.24-0.37; NNT 0.46; P<.001). CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggested that a real-world continuous remote temperature monitoring program was an effective strategy to prevent foot ulcer development and nontraumatic foot amputation among high-risk patients.

RESUMO

In this study, the total synthesis of osajin, scandenone and their analogues have been accomplished. The key synthetic steps include aldol/intramolecular iodoetherification/elimination sequence reactions and a Suzuki coupling reaction to assemble the tricyclic core, chemoselective propargylation and Claisen rearrangement reactions to obtain natural compounds. In addition, we also designed and synthesized twenty-five natural product analogues. All synthetic compounds were screened for anti-inflammatory activity against tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated RAW264.7 macrophages. Collectively, Compound 39e and 39d were considered as promising lead compounds for further development.

RESUMO

Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) play critical roles in the carcinogenesis and progression of cancers. However, the role and mechanism of the pseudogene lncRNA PIN1P1 in gastric carcinoma remain unclear. The expression and effects of lncRNA PIN1P1 in gastric cancer were investigated. The transcriptional regulation of CREB1 on PIN1P1 was determined by ChIP and luciferase assays. The mechanistic model of PIN1P1 in gastric cancer was further explored by RNA pull-down, RIP and western blot analysis. PIN1P1 was overexpressed in gastric cancer tissues, and upregulated PIN1P1 predicted poor prognosis in patients. CREB1 was directly combined with the promoter region of PIN1P1 to promote the transcription of PIN1P1. CREB1-mediated enhanced proliferation, migration and invasion could be partially reversed by downregulation of PIN1P1. Overexpressed PIN1P1 promoted the proliferation, migration and invasion of gastric cancer cells, whereas decreased PIN1P1 showed the opposite effects. PIN1P1 directly interacted with YBX1 and promoted YBX1 protein expression, leading to upregulation of PIN1, in which E2F1 may be involved. Silencing of YBX1 during PIN1P1 overexpression could partially rescue PIN1 upregulation. PIN1, the parental gene of PIN1P1, was elevated in gastric cancer tissues, and its upregulation was correlated with poor patient outcomes. PIN1 facilitated gastric cancer cell proliferation, migration and invasion. To sum up, CREB1-activated PIN1P1 could promote gastric cancer progression through YBX1 and upregulating PIN1, suggesting that it is a potential target for gastric cancer.

RESUMO

The ternary alloy CdSxSe1-xcombines the physical properties of CdS and CdSe, and its band gap can be adjusted by changing the element composition. The alloy has charming photoelectric properties as well as potential application value in photoelectric devices. In this work, the CdS/CdS0.42Se0.58nanobelt (NB) heterojunction device was prepared by chemical vapor deposition combined with a typical dry transfer technique. The heterojunction photodetector shows high light switching ratio of 6.79 × 104, large spectral responsivity of 1260 A W-1, high external quantum efficiency of 2.66 × 105% and large detectivity of 7.19 × 1015cm Hz1/2W-1under 590 nm illumination and 3 V bias. Its rise and decay time is about 45/90µs. The performance of the heterojunction photodetector was comparable or even better than that of other CdS(Se) based photodetector device. The results indicate that the CdS/CdS0.42Se0.58NB heterojunction possesses a promising potential application in high performance photodetectors.

RESUMO

Chemical oxygen demand (COD) is an important indicator for monitoring the quality of seawater. The COD of seawater reflects the levels of organic pollutants in the water. Methods that are commonly used to measure the COD of seawater have high accuracy, good repeatability, and low costs. However, using them for the in situ real-time monitoring of the COD of seawater is unfavorable because they require complex procedures and a long measurement time and may cause pollution to the environment. This paper reports on an optical sensor that accurately determines the COD of seawater in situ. The COD determination is based on the absorption of ultraviolet and visible lights with different wavelengths by organic matter in the water. Single-point LEDs emitting lights with different wavelengths (254, 265, 280, and 546 nm) were used as sources of excitation lights, and photodiodes were used as receiving devices. The optical system, circuit system, and mechanical structure of the sensor were efficiently integrated. The inversion of the COD of seawater was obtained after turbidity correction using the multiple linear regression algorithm. The maximum measurement error, detection limit, and repeatability of the sensor were 5%, 0.05 mg/l, and 0.62%, respectively. Moreover, the R2 values for correlations between COD values and absorbance values measured at three wavelengths (254, 265, and 280 nm) were above 0.99. Overall, the sensor is suitable for the in situ real-time monitoring of the COD of seawater. It requires a short measurement time and generates no pollution.

RESUMO

Despite the increasing awareness of long-term care (LTC) research after the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic, little attention was given to quantitatively describe the evolution of the research field during this period. A total of 1024 articles retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection database were systematically analyzed using CiteSpace visualization software. The overall characteristics analysis showed that, in the context of the pandemic, attention to LTC research increased significantly-over 800 articles were published in the past two years. The USA, Canada, Italy, and England formed the leading LTC research group, which was consistent with the conclusions of existing bibliometric studies on LTC research before the outbreak. A rigorous analysis based on a dual perspective of references and keywords was applied to reveal that, compared with previous studies, in the context of the pandemic, the focus shifted from the mental and physical health status of older adults in need of LTC to the impact of the pandemic on those of older adults in LTC facilities, from the prevention of general epidemics to the prevention and response of significant public health emergencies, from providing and paying for LTC to strategies for LTC facilities to improve the quality of LTC and well-being of their residents during the pandemic. These findings can provide help and reference for academics, civil folks, and LTC practitioners, as well as help with the sustainable development of LTC research in the context of COVID-19 pandemic.

RESUMO

Obtaining an accurate measurement of 18O/16O at natural abundance level for land plants-derived α-cellulose with the currently popular EA/Py/IRMS (elemental analysis/pyrolysis/isotope ratio mass spectrometry) method is a challenge due to the hygroscopic nature of the exposed hydroxyl groups, as the 18O/16O of adsorbed moisture is usually different from that of the α-cellulose and the relative amount of adsorbed moisture is sample- and relative humidity-dependent. To minimize the hygroscopicity-related measurement error, we capped the hydroxyl groups of α-cellulose by benzylation to various degrees and found that the 18O/16O ratio of α-cellulose increased with the degree of benzyl substitution (DS), consistent with the theoretical prediction that a reduced presence of exposed hydroxyl groups should lead to a more accurate (and therefore more reliable) α-cellulose 18O/16O measurement. We propose the establishment of a moisture adsorption-degree of substitution or percentage of oxygen-18O/16O ratio equation, based on the measurement of C%, O% and δ18O of variably capped α-cellulose, so that a robust correction can be made in a plant species- and laboratory conditions-specific manner. Failure to do so will lead to an average underestimate of α-cellulose δ18O by 3.5 mUr under "average" laboratory conditions.

RESUMO

The first total synthesis of lineaflavones A, C, D, and their analogues has been accomplished. The key synthetic steps include aldol/oxa-Michael/dehydration sequence reactions to assemble the tricyclic core, Claisen rearrangement and Schenck ene reaction to construct the key intermediate, and selective substitution or elimination of tertiary allylic alcohol to obtain natural compounds. In addition, we also explored five new routes to synthesize fifty-three natural product analogues, which can contribute to a systematic structure-activity relationship during biological evaluation.

RESUMO

Since the pace of population aging is getting faster than in the past, the population aging has been a serious social concern. The Quality of life (QOL) of the older adults, especially the oldest old, and their mental health problems need more public attention, for the purpose of enhancing their late well-being. Therefore, the current study aims to investigate the longitudinal relationship between loneliness to quality of life and mental health problems, considering the moderation effect of mindfulness among the oldest old. A total of 457 Chinese oldest-old completed questionnaires measuring mindfulness, loneliness, QOL, and mental health problems at baseline, and completed QOL and mental health problems again at six-month follow-up. Results showed that the longitudinal positive association between loneliness and mental health problems was significant (r = .401, p < .01). Nevertheless, loneliness was positively correlated with QOL (r = .242, p < .01). Additionally, mindfulness significantly moderated the association between loneliness and mental health problems. Specifically, higher mindfulness was associated with a weaker longitudinal relationship between loneliness and mental health problems. However, mindfulness did not moderate the relationship between loneliness and QOL. These findings indicated that loneliness can be a risk factor of mental health problems, and mindfulness can buffer the adverse effect of loneliness on mental health problems among the oldest old. Limitations and implications were discussed.

RESUMO

The 18O/16O ratio of α-cellulose in land plants has proved of interest for climate, environmental, physiological, and metabolic studies. Reliable application of such a ratio may be compromised by the presence of hemicellulose impurities in the α-cellulose product obtainable with current extraction methods, as the impurities are known to be isotopically different from that of the α-cellulose. We first compared the quality of hydrolysates of "α-cellulose products" obtained with four representative extraction methods (Jayme and Wise; Brendel; Zhou; Loader) and quantified the hemicellulose-derived non-glucose sugars in the α-cellulose products from 40 land grass species using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS). Second, we performed compound-specific isotope analysis of the hydrolysates using GC/Pyrolysis/IRMS. These results were then compared with the bulk isotope analysis using EA/Pyrolysis/IRMS of the α-cellulose products. We found that overall, the Zhou method afforded the highest purity α-cellulose as judged by the minimal presence of lignin and the second-lowest presence of non-glucose sugars. Isotopic analysis then showed that the O-2-O-6 of the α-cellulose glucosyl units were all depleted in 18O by 0.0-4.3 mUr (average, 1.9 mUr) in a species-dependent manner relative to the α-cellulose products. The positive isotopic bias of using the α-cellulose product instead of the glucosyl units stems mainly from the fact that the pentoses that dominate hemicellulose contamination in the α-cellulose product are relatively enriched in 18O (compared to hexoses) as they inherit only the relatively 18O-enriched O-2-O-5 moiety of sucrose, the common precursor of pentoses and hexoses in cellulose, and are further enriched in 18O by the (incomplete) hydrolysis.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Gastric cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. And patient outcomes are poor due to tumor relapse and metastasis. To develop new therapeutic strategies, it is of great importance to explore the mechanism underlying the progression of gastric cancer. METHODS: Primary gastric cancer samples with lymph node metastases (LNM) and without LNM were subjected to mRNA microarray assay. The differentially expressed genes were confirmed by RT-qPCR. HRCT1 protein expression was further detected using an immunohistochemistry (IHC) assay. In vitro and in vivo assays were performed to investigate the role of HRCT1 in tumor invasion, metastasis, and proliferation. The expressions of the downstream target genes of HRCT1 were detected by microarray, RT-qPCR and Western blot assays. Dual-luciferase reporter and Western blot assays were carried out to identify miRNAs target to HRCT1. RESULTS: HRCT1 was upregulated in gastric cancer, and high expression of HRCT1 was associated with poor overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS). Moreover, HRCT1protein expression was an independent predictor for poor OS and DFS. HRCT1 could promote gastric cancer cells' migration, invasion, and proliferation in vitro as well as tumor metastasis and growth in vivo. Notably, our data showed that HRCT1 promoted gastric cancer progression by activating the ERBB2-MAPK signaling pathway. At least partially, the expression of HRCT1 could be negatively regulated by miR-124-3p. CONCLUSIONS: The upregulated expression of HRCT1 predicts poor survival for patients with gastric cancer. HRCT1 promotes tumor progression by activating the ERBB2-MAPK pathway. HRCT1, negatively regulated by miR-124-3p, may be a potential therapeutic target for patients with gastric cancer.

RESUMO

Radioactive contamination, especially the uranium pollution, is threatening the ecological environment. How to efficiently and quickly remove uranium from the environment is a problem to be solved. Herein, the dodecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide embellished titanium dioxide (DTAB/TiO2) was prepared as an adsorbent to adsorb uranium (U) from water. The introduction of dodecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide can improve the adsorption capacity of titanium dioxide for U(VI). Besides, the excellent chemical stability of DTAB/TiO2 would not result in secondary pollution, which was the novelty of this work. The DTAB/TiO2 composite was composed of nanoparticles and presented a spherical morphology with a rough surface. The radius of DTAB/TiO2 was 0.45 µm, and the specific surface area reached 144.0 m2/g. The removal of U(VI) on DTAB/TiO2 was a monolayer adsorption process, and the removal process was dependent on the solution pH. The capture of U(VI) improved with the temperature increase, indicating an endothermic process. The adsorption process can reach equilibrium within 240 min. Based on the Langmuir model, the adsorption capacity of DTAB/TiO2 for U(VI) reached 108.4 mg/g. The surface oxygen-containing functional groups, especially hydroxyl groups, played a crucial role in removing U(VI). This work can provide useful information for the cleanup of uranium and expand the application of surfactants.

RESUMO

Breast cancer (BC) is a complex disease comprising multiple distinct subtypes with different genetic features and pathological characteristics. Although a large number of antineoplastic compounds have been approved for clinical use, patient-to-patient variability in drug response is frequently observed, highlighting the need for efficient treatment prediction for individualized therapy. Several patient-derived models have been established lately for the prediction of drug response. However, each of these models has its limitations that impede their clinical application. Here, we report that the whole-tumor cell culture (WTC) ex vivo model could be stably established from all breast tumors with a high success rate (98 out of 116), and it could reassemble the parental tumors with the endogenous microenvironment. We observed strong clinical associations and predictive values from the investigation of a broad range of BC therapies with WTCs derived from a patient cohort. The accuracy was further supported by the correlation between WTC-based test results and patients' clinical responses in a separate validation study, where the neoadjuvant treatment regimens of 15 BC patients were mimicked. Collectively, the WTC model allows us to accomplish personalized drug testing within 10 d, even for small-sized tumors, highlighting its potential for individualized BC therapy. Furthermore, coupled with genomic and transcriptomic analyses, WTC-based testing can also help to stratify specific patient groups for assignment into appropriate clinical trials, as well as validate potential biomarkers during drug development.

RESUMO

Breast cancer (BC) is the most common malignant tumor in women worldwide. Metastasis is the main cause of BC-related death. The specific mechanism underlying BC metastasis remains obscure. Recently, PRSS22 was discovered to be involved in tumor development, however, its detailed biological function and regulatory mechanism in BC are unclear. Here, we characterized that PRSS22 expression is upregulated in BC tissues compared with non-tumorous breast tissues. Dual luciferase assays, bioinformatics analyses and chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP) assays indicated that transcription factor E2F1 directly binds to the PRSS22 promoter region and activates its transcription. Functionally, upregulation of PRSS22 promoted invasion and metastasis of BC cells in vitro and in vivo, whereas knockdown of PRSS22 inhibited its function. Mechanistically, the combination of PRSS22 and ANXA1 protein in BC cells was first screened by protein mass spectrometry analysis, and then confirmed by co-immunoprecipitation (Co-IP) and western blot assays. Co-overexpression of PRSS22 and ANXA1 could promote BC cell migration and invasion. We further demonstrated that PRSS22 promotes the cleavage of ANXA1 and in turn generates an N-terminal peptide, which initiates the FPR2/ERK signaling axis to increase BC aggressiveness.

RESUMO

Expanding the enzymatic toolbox for the green synthesis of valuable molecules is still of high interest in synthetic chemistry and the pharmaceutical industry. Chiral thiiranes are valuable sulfur-containing heterocyclic compounds, but relevant methods for their enantioselective synthesis are limited. Herein, we report a biocatalytic thionation strategy for the enantioselective synthesis of thiiranes, which was developed based on the halohydrin dehalogenase (HHDH)-catalyzed enantioselective ring-opening reaction of epoxides with thiocyanate and a subsequent nonenzymatic rearrangement process. A novel HHDH was identified and engineered for enantioselective biocatalytic thionation of various aryl- and alkyl-substituted epoxides on a preparative scale, affording the corresponding thiiranes in up to 43 % isolated yield and 98 % ee. Large-scale synthesis and useful transformations of chiral thiiranes were also performed to demonstrate the utility and scalability of the biocatalytic thionation strategy.

RESUMO

The Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has severely affected the lives of people around the world, especially some patients with severe chronic diseases. This study aims to evaluate the impact of the COVID-19 outbreak from December 2019 to April 2020 on treating patients with PH. A questionnaire regarding the medical condition of PH patients during the COVID-19 pandemic was designed by PH diagnostic experts in The First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University, China Respiratory Center. One hundred and fifty-six subjects with PH from non-Hubei regions in China were invited to participate in this survey online. 63.4% (n = 99) of them had difficulty seeing a doctor, and the main reason was fear of contracting severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) in the hospital. Medical treatment was affected in 25% (n = 39) of patients, and who lived in rural areas, and discontinued medical therapy for financial reasons were at a higher risk of medical treatment being affected. Patients who reduced nutrition, and had difficulty seeing a doctor were more likely to get deteriorated. During the epidemic, the hospitalization rate of PH patients was 33.33%. Patients with aggravated PH had a high risk of hospitalization (odds ratio [OR] = 2.844), while patients who visited a doctor during the epidemic reduced the risk of hospitalization (OR = 0.33). In conclusion, during the COVID-19 pandemic, PH patients had difficulty seeing a doctor, and their medical treatment was affected, even worsened, and increased the risk of hospitalization.

RESUMO

Background: Previous studies have shown that various cell indices are associated with a higher risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE), however, whether these findings reflect a causal relationship remains unclear. Therefore, we performed a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to assess the causal association of various blood cells with VTE risk. Study Design and Methods: Summary statistics of genetic instruments representing cell indices for erythrocytes, leukocytes, and platelets were extracted from genome-wide association studies of European ancestry, by Two-Sample Mendelian Randomization. Inverse variance weighting (IVW) was used as the primary analytical method for MR. Sensitivity analyses were performed to detect horizontal pleiotropy and heterogeneity. Results: Genetically predicted red blood cell distribution width, mean reticulocyte volume, and mean red blood cell volume were positively associated with VTE, with odds ratio (OR) of 1.002 [CI 1.000-1.003, P = 0.022), 1.003 (CI 1.001-1.004, P = 0.001, respectively)] and 1.001 (CI 1.000-1.002, P = 0.005). Genetically predicted monocyte count was negatively correlated with VTE, with OR = 0.998 (CI 0.996-0.999, P = 0.041). Conclusion: Genetically liability to high- red blood cell distribution width, mean reticulocyte volume, mean red blood cell volume, and low monocyte count are associated with the higher risk of VTE. Targeting these factors might be a potential strategy to prevent VTE.

RESUMO

Rapid urbanization aggravates issues related to protection and optimization of the ecological environment. Constructing an ecological network system, including ecological values in planning, and using landscape effects efficiently are important for adjusting regional ecological space and promoting local sustainable development. Land use data from eight time points between 1980 and 2020 in the Zhengzhou Metropolitan Area were used to identify the local ecological sources, corridors and nodes and to identify an ecological network with high structural integrity. The study used the FLUS, MSPA, MCR, and gravity models, hydrological analysis, and network structure evaluation by applying tools such as ArcGIS, Guidos Toolbox and Conefor. The results indicated that: (1) among the nine major ecological sources, those in the Yellow River Basin connected the large-scale sources in the east and west of the network, and the rest were located in the northeast, southeast and southwest of the research area, semi-enclosing the main urban area of Zhengzhou. (2) There were 163 least-cost paths and 58 ecological corridors, mainly distributed along the Yellow River Basin. (3) There were 70 ecological nodes, divided into 10 strategic, 27 natural ecological and 33 artificial environment nodes, distributed in key locations such as the core of each source and the intersection of corridors. (4) The ecological network included all the landscape elements in the research area and connected the main ecological substrates in a semi-enclosing network structure with one horizontal and two vertical corridors and four clusters.

RESUMO

Novel visible-light-driven heterostructure semiconductors are considered as promising photocatalysts for the elimination of environmental organic pollutants. Herein, a solvent-assisted low-temperature in situ calcination strategy was developed to fabricate type II BiOIO3/Bi4O5I2 heterojunction by using BiOIO3 as self-sacrificed template. The phase transition temperature of BiOIO3 was reduced under solvent-assisted operating conditions. By controlling the elevated temperature from 200 to 300 °C, an in situ stepwise pyrolysis reaction occurred during the calcination process, which was described as BiOIO3 → BiOIO3/Bi4O5I2 → Bi4O5I2. The light absorption edge of different samples significantly red shifted from 385 to 632 nm with the increase of calcination temperature. Meanwhile, two interlocked interface lattice fringes were identified in high resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM) of BiOIO3/Bi4O5I2-250 composites, confirming the formation of BiOIO3/Bi4O5I2 heterojunction. The as-obtained BiOIO3/Bi4O5I2 heterojunction demonstrated the optimal photodegradation performance, which brought about 99.4% of bisphenol A (BPA) degraded within 30 min visible light (λ > 420 nm) illumination. Besides, after 5 repeated cycles, the photoactivity of BiOIO3/Bi4O5I2 heterojunction still maintained 91.5%, unfolding its high photostability. The superior photoreactivity of BiOIO3/Bi4O5I2 nanosheets was assigned to the formation of well-matched type II heterojunction, which significantly enhanced the separation and migration of photoinduced charge carriers. Superoxide radical (O2-) and hole (h+) are dominant reactive species in this photodegradation system. Based on active species quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (ESR) measurements, a possible type II heterojunction mechanism for enhanced photodegradation performance of BiOIO3/Bi4O5I2 heterostructure was proposed. This work affords an innovative method for design and construction of type II composites toward sustainable water purification.

BACKGROUND: Lower extremity complications of diabetes represent major health care complications both in terms of cost and impact to quality of life for patients with diabetic peripheral neuropathy. Temperature monitoring has been shown in previous studies to provide a useful signal of inflammation that may indicate the early presence of a foot injury. OBJECTIVE: In this study, we evaluated the temperature data for patients that presented with a diabetic foot injury while using a sock-based remote temperature monitoring device. METHODS: The study abstracted data from patients who were enrolled in a remote temperature monitoring program (2020-2021) using a smart sock (Siren Care). In the study cohort, a total of 5 participants with a diabetes-related lower extremity injury during the study period were identified. In the second comparison cohort, a total of 26 patients met the criteria for monitoring by the same methods but did not present with a diabetes-related podiatric lower extremity injury during the same period. The 15-day temperature differential between 6 defined locations on each foot was the primary outcome measure among subjects who presented with a diagnosed foot injury. Paired t tests were used to compare the differences between the two groups. RESULTS: A significant difference in temperature differential (temperature measured in °F) was observed in the group that presented with a podiatric injury over the course of evaluation versus the comparator group that did not present with a podiatric injury. The average difference from all 6 measured points was 1.4 °F between the injury group (mean 3.6, SD 3.0) and the comparator group (mean 2.2, SD 2.5, t=-71.4, df=39; P<.001). CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study suggest temperature monitoring in a sock form factor could be used to predict a developing foot injury. The continuous temperature monitoring system employed has implications for further algorithm development to enable early detection. The study was limited by a nonrandomized, observational design with limited injuries present in the study period. We look forward to further studies that will refine the predictive potential and confirm or refute the current promising data.
